Discovery of New Companions to High Proper Motion Stars from the VVV Survey

[abridged] The severe crowding in the direction of the inner Milky Way suggests that the census of stars within a few tens of parsecs in that direction may not be complete. We search for new nearby objects companions of known high proper motion (HPM) stars located towards the densest regions of the Southern Milky Way where the background contamination presented a major problem to previous works. The common proper motion (PM) method was used--we inspected the area around 167 known HPM (>=200 mas/yr) stars: 67 in the disk and 100 in the bulge. Dynamics of Binary Active Clusters Driven by Ion-Exchange Particles

We present a framework to quantitatively predict the linear and rotational directed motion of synthetic modular microswimmers. To this end, we study binary dimers and characterize their approach motion as effective interactions within a minimal model. We apply this framework to the assembly of small aggregates composed of a cationic ion-exchange particle with up to five passive particles or anionic ion-exchange particles at dilute conditions. Particles sediment and move close to a substrate, above which the ion-exchange particles generate flow. Studies of fundamental parameters of very low-mass objects are indispensable to provide tests of stellar evolution models that are used to derive theoretical masses of brown dwarfs and planets. However, only objects with dynamically determined masses and precise photometry can effectively evaluate the predictions of stellar models. AB Dor C (0.090 solar masses) has become a prime benchmark for calibration of theoretical evolutionary models of low-mass young stars. The HADES RV Programme with HARPS-N@TNG VIII. Gl15A: A multiple wide planetary system sculpted by binary interaction

We present 20 years of radial velocity (RV) measurements of the M1 dwarf Gl15A, combining 5 years of intensive RV monitoring with the HARPS-N spectrograph with 15 years of archival HIRES/Keck RV data. We carry out an MCMC-based analysis of the RV time series, inclusive of Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the description of stellar activity induced RV variations. Our analysis confirms the Keplerian nature and refines the orbital solution for the 11.44-day period super Earth, Gl15A\,b, reducing its amplitude to $1.68^{+0.17}_{-0.18}$ m s$^{-1}$ ($M \sin i = 3.03^{+0.46}_{-0.44}$ M$_\oplus$), and successfully models a long-term trend in the combined RV dataset in terms of a Keplerian orbit wi…
Model calculations of phase diagrams of magnetic alloys on the body-centered-cubic lattice.

We treat a model for a binary (AB) alloy, where species A is magnetic (Ising spin σi = ± 1) while species B is not, and repulsive interactions are assumed between first and second neighbors of the same kind, in addition to a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Both the mean-field approximation, the cluster variation (CV) method in the tetrahedron approximation and the Monte Carlo (MC) method are applied; comparing the phase diagrams obtained by the various approximations their accuracy is tested. It is shown that the CV method is in rather close agreement with the MC method for the present problem.
Fluctuations, response and aging dynamics in a simple glass-forming liquid out of equilibrium

By means of molecular dynamics computer simulations we investigate the out of equilibrium relaxation dynamics of a simple glass former, a binary Lennard-Jones system, after a quench to low temperatures. We study both one time quantities and two-times correlation functions. Two-times correlation functions show a strong time and waiting time $t_w$ dependence. For large $t_w$ and times corresponding to the early $\beta$-relaxation regime the correlators approach the Edwards-Anderson value by means of a power-law in time. at long times $\tau$ the correlation functions can be expressed as $C_{\rm AG}(h(t_w+\tau)/h(t_w))$ and compute the function $h(t)$. Context. Recent detection of a yellow supergiant star as a possible progenitor of a supernova has posed serious questions about our understanding of the evolution of massive stars. Aims. The spectroscopic binary star HD 50975 with an unseen hot secondary was studied in detail with the main goal of estimating fundamental parameters of both components and the binary system. Methods. Discovery of a redshifted X-ray emission line in the symbiotic neutron star binary 4U 1700+24

We present the spectral analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the X-ray binary 4U 1700+24, performed during an outburst in August 2002. The EPIC-PN spectrum above 1 keV can be modeled by a blackbody plus Comptonization model, as in previous observations. At lower energies, however, we detect a prominent soft excess, which we model with a broad Gaussian centered at ~0.5 keV. In the high resolution RGS spectrum we detect a single emission line, centered at 19.19^{+0.05}_{-0.09} \AA. We discuss two possible interpretations for this line: O VIII at redshift z=0.012^{+0.002}_{-0.004} or Ne IX at redshift z~0.4.
Aging effects manifested in the potential-energy landscape of a model glass former

We present molecular dynamics simulations of a model glass-forming liquid (the binary Kob-Anderson Lennard-Jones model) and consider the distributions of inherent energies and metabasins during aging. In addition to the typical protocol of performing a temperature jump from a high temperature to a low destination temperature, we consider the temporal evolution of the distributions after an 'up-jump', i.e. from a low to a high temperature. In this case the distribution of megabasin energies exhibits a transient two-peak structure. Our results can qualitatively be rationalized in terms of a trap model with a Gaussian distribution of trap energies. The analysis is performed for different syste…
